A: The theme in the background (often played by the cello, for instance) is a variation of "Dies Irae" ("Days of Wrath") which is an old piece of Gregorian chant set to a Latin hymn, and has been used in countless pieces by many, many composers (I found a list of at least 75 on wikipedia). The orignal piece is about the Day of Judgement.
