Soundtrack Q & A
Q: What is the name of the opening credits song, and who sings it? (from Pam in hollywood, florida)
A: Hey Pam I just saw the movie, and I do believe it's the last song on the sound track... "Chaiyya Chaiyya Bollywood Joint" (thanks to will, MARYLAND USAadd more info
A: The opening credits song is from the indian movie DIL SE and it's called "Chaiyya Chaiyya." Both the original and the remix were heard in the movie... and the one towards the end credits was the remix version by panjabi MC. The one in the beginning was the original sung by Sukhwinder Sing and Sapna Awasti. (thanks to sushma, INDIAadd more info
A: Actually, that song is ALSO from the London and New York musical "Bollywood Dreams." The music was written by the famous Indian film composer A.R. Rahman and was used in the movie previously cited, then he re-used it when Andrew Lloyd Webber asked him to provide the score for a new musical he wanted to produce. I was stunned to hear it in the film and waited until the end credits to verify it was Rahman. (thanks to morsborn, Seattleadd more info
A: The opening credits song Chaiyya Chaiyya is originally from the Indian movie Dil Se. It is sung by Sukhvinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi, lyrics by Gulzar and music by AR Rahman. You can watch the video from the original song here. (thanks to Sonia, Indiaadd more info
A: Yeah you are right. There are a few different remixes but the one you want is "Bolliwood Dreams" - that's the best one by far. (thanks to mag, londonadd more info
A: On the DVD's commentary, Spike Lee says he used the song because he teaches a class at an NYC film school and one of his female indian students brought him a copy of the Dil Se DVD and he liked it so much he wanted to include "Chaiyya Chaiyya" in a movie. (thanks to Bri, minneapolisadd more info
A: It's "Chaiyya Chaiyya" orignally from the movie Dil Se, which features Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan. (thanks to razi, dubai , uaeadd more info
A: The song originally featured in the movie Dil Se. It was later adapted in the London musical Bollywood Dreams. (thanks to Shankar, Indiaadd more info

Q: Is there a particular reason why the opening credit song is what it is? I mean, why an indian song? Why that indian song? Just out of curiosity.... (from tonya in college station, texas, USA)
A: The wordings of the song have no bearance on the movie whatsoever. It was there just because it sounds cool. (thanks to apachepunk, Connecticutadd more info
A: It's not a "random" addition. The remixed version of the song is a tribute to New York and the different cultures that have thrived despite discrimination. The movie has undertones of racism as well. Being a catchy tune is an added advantage (thanks to PurpleHaze, Memphis, TNadd more info
A: There seems to be no particular reason why this song was used except for the fact that it is really good. It is from the Indian movie Dil Se and was a big hit in India around 10 years ago. The lyrics by famous Indian poet Gulzar, are mainly in Urdu and they are beautiful. A translation can be found here. The subtleties of poetry are lost in translation but it is close enough. (thanks to Sonia, Indiaadd more info

Q: What is the song that plays on the guy's phone in the movie? (from 400club in USA)
A: I believe it is Kanye West/Jamie Foxx in Golddigger. (thanks to Kristoffer, Copenhagen, Denmarkadd more info

Q: There is a song with no words in this movie. Saw and Saw II also contain this same song. I have no idea what it is called. Please help! Thanks. (from Garrett B in Canada)
A: I think you are thinking of "Hello Zepp." That's the name of the song in Saw and Saw 2, and I think it's the same one in this movie. (thanks to Ben, Denmark, Wisconsinadd more info

Q: What is the song that comes after "Chaiyya Chaiyya" during the end credits? (from Rene in Georgia)
A: There is none, if I'm not mistaken. I think you're talking about the remixed rap version with Panjabi MC called "Can I Get A (Chaiyya Chaiyya) - Hindi Remix." (thanks to mkw, HIadd more info

Q: How long is the last track ("Chaiyya, Chaiyya" remix)? It is quite long in the closing credits of the movie and was wondering if the CD track is the same length. (from aanr in Canada)
A: It's 6:48 (thanks to Millz, Torontoadd more info

Q: What is the exact title of the hip hop remix of "Chaiyya Chaiyya"? Isn't the "Can I get a (chaiyya chaiyya) hindi remix" a remix of an old Jay-Z record? (from Tony in Orlando, FL, USA)
A: I believe it's "Chaiyya Chaiyya Bollywood Joint" - Written by A.R. Rahman, Gulzar, Panjabi MC - Performed by Sukhwinder Singh, Sapna Awasthi featuring Panjabi MC. (thanks to Deb, washington, dcadd more info

Q: Okay, I'm crazy about the Chaiyya Chaiyya Remix with Panjabi MC. I really want the lyrics to his rap verses in this song, but I can't find them ANYWHERE!!! Does anyone know where they are? (from Mira in USA)
A:
Chorus:
He whose head is in the shadow of love
will have heaven beneath his feet.
Whose head is in the shadow of love...
Walk in the shadow.
Walk in heaven, walk in the shadow.

There's a friend who is like a sweet fragrance,
whose words are like poetry (lit. Urdu, the language of poetry),
who is my evening, my night, my existence.
That friend is my beloved!

Chorus

Sometimes (my beloved) flirts like a flower,
so fragrantly that you may see her scent.
Having made it into an charm, I will wear it.
She shall be obtained as a miracle is obtained.
She is my song, my declaration of faith
(kalama: the Muslim confession of faith, as in, "la ilaaha il allaah" - "there is no God but Allah").
(My friend is like a priest to me.)
My song... my declaration of faith...
She moves like the dew.
She walks with the garden of heaven beneath her feet,
sometimes through the branches, sometimes amidst the leaves.
I shall search the wind for her trail!

Chorus

trade in her beauty.
Fickle, she flits shamelessly from sun to shade.
She changes her bright colors;
I negotiate that as well.

Chorus

A: Unfortunately, these are the Hindi parts translation and not the lyrics to the rap verses of the Chaiyya Chaiyya Remix with Panjabi MC. If anyone has the lyrics to the part, I'd appreciate that as well. (thanks to Eduardo, Curitiba, Braziladd more info

Q: Is there a place where I can download/purchase this song (I am interested only on the Chaiyya Chaiyya versions). They are terrific! Great input everyone, I spent almost 45 min trying to get the song or really find out more 'bout it, but this one was the only real place where all my questions were answered. (from Andreux in Madison WI)
A: Download from coolgoose music. There they have all the songs from India. Search under music. Hindi songs. Chaiyya chaiyya. It has been a pheonmenally popular song from a Bollywood movie for 8 years. This original soundtrack is from another Bollywood movie Dil se. Get the video. Very interesting dance sequence on a running train through forest. (thanks to Karthik, MOadd more info

Q: Terrence Blanchard's music from this movie was used in Spike Lee's "When the Levees broke" documentary about Hurricane Katrina. Is there anywhere to get the soundtrack to the documentary and does anyone know what string quartet recorded the music for either this soundtrack or the "When the Levees Broke" soundtrack? thanks! katie  (from katie in washington DC)
A: Not sure about the soundtrack, but the song is "Nazis Pay Too Well" from the Inside Man soundtrack. Hope that helps! (thanks to Beth, Clearwater, FLadd more info
A: "Nazis Pay Too Well" and "Photo Ops" were used in "When the Levees Broke". In my opinion, they are much stronger in "When the Levees Broke" than in "Inside Man". (thanks to pdwxm29, oregonadd more info

Q: I saw this movie on the USA Network about a week ago (the first week of November 2008). There was a commercial for this movie on the USA Network also and it had a song playing in the background on the second half of the commercial, it was an upbeat and face paced song with trumpets/brass instruments playing along with the beat. It sounded jazzy but was more of a faster uptempo kind of beat. I couldn't find this song on the soundtrack or anywhere else. I think it was only used for the commercial on the USA Network channel. Any info about this would be greatly appreciated.

Q: I don't think it's on the soundtrack, but there is a slow jazz song playing in Det. Frazier's girlfriend's apartment when she calls him to see how he is doing. Anyone know what it is?
