Soundtrack Q & A
Q: Does anyone know the song playing in the final credits? (from Scott Gourvitz in queens, ny)
A: "Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Donovan (thanks to Phoenix, UTadd more info

Q: The song I'm looking for is not on the soundtrack but is played in the movie, during the scene where the Zodiac kills the cab driver. All I know is that the beat and guitar sounds suggest a psychedelic-like rock track. The song also ends with the chanting of "ring around the rosey." If anyone can tell me the name of this song and who it is by I would be entirely grateful. Have nearly beaten myself to death in trying to find out. (from Gordie in Greenwood, SC, USA)
A: There are two songs in that scene. The one you're looking for is by Vanilla Fudge called "Bang Bang." The other one is an instrumental and is by Charles Ives called "The Unanswered Question." (thanks to Alex, New Yorkadd more info

Q: What was David Shire's part in the music of the movie? (from Constance in New Jersey)
A: He wrote the original underscore, which is available on a separate album: Zodiac score soundtrack (thanks to OSTfan, Burlingameadd more info

Q: What's the name of the song playing in the second trailer? It's a guitar song that starts when Robert Graysmith says "...eagle scout actually, first class... (from James in Virginia)
A: "I know I'm Losing You" by Rod Stewart. (thanks to Monica, Floridaadd more info

Q: What's the song playing when the guy and the girl get shot in the car at the very beginning? (from jake in Texas)
A: It is the "Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Scottish singer Donovan (Donovan Philips Leitch). (thanks to Big Ball Ball, Nanjing, Chinaadd more info

Q: What song is playing in the second to last scene when Graysmith walks in to see Leigh? There's a guitar solo playing in the background. (from MatteMattMan in North Carolina)
A: I don't know about guitar solo but there is a sax solo playing as they stare at each other which is from Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. (thanks to dyner, Franceadd more info
A: This bothered me too. It is Eric Clapton's "Layla." (thanks to Fede, Baltimore, MDadd more info

Q: What song is playing before Santana's "Soul Sacrifice"? The same song is playing in the first part of the credits.
...from bathory in Spain (answer bathory's question)

Q: What's the song playing 10 minutes before the movie ends when Jake Gyllenhaal is talking in restaurant/bar with Mark Ruffalo? (from lolo in POLAND)
A: Boz Scaggs "Lowdown" (thanks to g, usgayadd more info

Q: What the song playing when Cecilia Shepard and Bryan Hartnell are in the car? (from john bowersox in san diego california)
A: It's "Jean" by Rod McKuen. (thanks to Fritewig, NYCadd more info

Q: What's the song we hear when the big building appears under construction in fast forward? (from Chulio in Santiago, Dominican Republic)
A: It's on the soundtrack... the song is called "Inner City Blues" by Marvin Gaye. (thanks to OSCAR D, SUNNYVALE, CAadd more info

Q: What's the song playing as Ins. Parish is in his car just after he came home drunk and was yelling at his wife about locking the door? (from Matt in Land O' Lakes, FL)
A: Clumsy me, I was thinking of the 2005 Zodiac film. And the song is "Time Has Come Today" by the Chambers Brothers Band. (thanks to Matt, Land O' Lakes, FLAadd more info

Q: What's the song playing on the radio in the hardware store almost at the end of the movie when Graysmith meets Leigh and he doesn't confront him? It's an old song... (from antoniosantiagop in bogota colombia)
A: The song is "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty from the 1978 album City to City -- an excellent album by the way! (thanks to Marco O., Brooklyn, New Yorkadd more info

Q: What is the song playing in the background as Jake and Robert Downey Jr are sitting at a booth going over the cypher?
...from Curtis in Waurika, Oklahoma (answer Curtis's question)

Q: What song is playing over the texts at the very end of the movie? It fades out with the introduce to the final credits.
...from Azrael in Germany (answer Azrael's question)

Q: I've been going through the film with a fine tooth comb, playing and replaying sections where lyrics are decipherable then Googling them, and the following are not on the soundtrack nor mentioned in the Q&A section of this page (which I've found quite useful):
Gary Puckett and the Union Gap - "Young Girl"
(Graysmith wanders past the hack bar on his way home, envious of Avery et al.'s goodtime antics)

Jerry and the Pacemakers - "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying"
(Tosci & Armstrong head to the dead cabbie crime scene)

Tommy James and the Shondells - "Crystal Blue Persuasion"
(Avery has been converted to the way of the effeminate-appearing sea blue cocktail)

Perry Como - "No Christmas Like a Home Christmas"
(Belli the Stones lawyer shows off his serial killer letter)

Director's Cut only - the fade-to-black, years-pass audio montage:

America - "Horse With No Name"

(Funk over the Manson bit - not sure about this)

 Janis Ian - "At Seventeen"

Bachman-Turner Overdrive - "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"

(Not sure about this one, either)

 Ohio Players - "Love Rollercoaster"
And that's it. What I'd really appreciate help with is the music in (1) the restaurant scene, in a non-English language, (2) the BLT scene, (3) the interview with - I think - Allen's sister-in-law, where she says his brief psychiatrist said he was capable of murder, and (3) of course all the bits I couldn't identify above. Cheers if so!
...from Solid Snail in Wales (answer Solid Snail's question)

Q: What is the song playing in Robert Downey's trailer when Gyllenhall goes to visit him once the case is old news and talks about writing a book?
...from Barry Pepper in LA (answer Barry Pepper's question)

Q: What song is playing when Robert goes to see Paul in his boathouse to talk about writing a book? It is radio background music heard just before Robert is knocking on Paul's door.
...from Mr.Sino in SA (answer Mr.Sino's question)
